Thoughts - What you might be able to do for an Intergenerational Day in School.

Adopt a Grandparent!

Children don't have to feel left out because their Grandparents cannot come to the school.  They can invite another older person; a grandaunt or neighbour.  It will bring great joy to both individuals.

1. Invite selected grandparents, granduncles, aunts or older people in the community to talk with the children about what life was like when they were young. Discuss school life, their favourite games, what they played.

2. Children write a profile of their grandparents as a collaborative exercise on the Day, suitable to age and class.

3. As a collaborative exercise, children make a family tree with their grandrelatives/neighbour.

4. Conduct a tree/flower planting ceremony to honour all grandparents, alive, abroad and no longer with us.

6. History; investigate the past through grandparents eye witness accounts of famous Irish/National events…….World War 2; the Irish Civil War

7. Record the visit; write what you learnt; research the topic more;

8. Children then take over as the teachers, teaching how to send an e-mail; use a digital camera/MP3 player.

9.  Hold a table quiz, with teams of mixed generations, with various topics per round.

10. Have an art exhibition and display the children's pictures/ stories/poems about their grandparents. Invite the grandparents to come and view the display.

11. Organise a Scavenger Hunt/ Treasure Hunt in the school grounds, with teams of Grandparents and grandchildren, one grandparent per team of four.
